Making much of clever counsel – a hymn inspired by Luke 20:27-38

Making much of clever counsel – a hymn inspired by Luke 20:27-38

1           Making much of clever counsel
lawyers sought to trip and flaw.
              Jesus answered with God’s wisdom,
offered grace to cut through law.

2           God of Jesus, God of Moses,
              God of Hannah and of Ruth;
God of Dorcas, God of Peter,
              help us understand your truth

3           Held by things that do not matter,
we can sometimes miss our place,
              nothings fuel our indignation
still we’re blinded to your grace.

4           Open eyes and hearts to kindness,
help us see beyond the lies
              that would complicate your goodness,
              God with grace awake, surprise!

A sacramental union – Hymn/Poem Inspired by Mark 10:2-16

A sacramental union - Inspired by Mark 10:2-16

A sacramental union
that none can put apart,
and those who sought to fudge the law,
were challenged from the start.
The Pharisees were undermined,
the laws would stay in place,
with subtle ways of subterfuge
destroyed without a trace.

Then learning from this interchange
should we condemn and judge,
or take a wider view of Christ,
his spirit and his touch?
When questions of adultery
were set to catch him out,
he turned a mirror on the crowd
and none were left to shout.

Hypocrisy and judgment were
things that Christ condemned,
and so we need to judge ourselves
before we charge a friend.
To love as we would love ourselves
a child can understand,
and we must unlearn prejudice,
give grace the upper-hand.

Discipleship, justice and mercy – a hymn

This last week some of us have remembered Jesus being presented in the temple. Soon our readings turn to the calling of disciples. We follow in their footsteps. As we do we are presented, not just with things we should believe, but how we live, the values we should hold.

1 God's commandments link together justice, mercy, love and grace; elements to guide the framing of our laws within this place. Yet the laws and legal judgments that we form through human thought, all too easily diminish values that the Christ had sought.
2 As we follow in his footsteps as disciples, let us find, ways to live in peace together, ways that bring God's grace to mind; ways of gracious peaceful living, that might spread throughout the earth, ways of God's audacious giving: let the spirit find new birth.

When strangers are unwelcome – those needing asylum

When strangers are unwelcome

When strangers are unwelcome
the church’s heart beats slow,
the lost who run from danger
have nowhere left to go.
No words of grace are spoken
while, looking on the world,
the heart of God is broken:
love’s banner tightly furled.

The people at our borders
who need compassion now,
reach out for care and shelter,
but rules will not allow
these ones to seek asylum:
we put up legal walls.
Before we’ve even met them
we disregard their calls.

Then images from scripture speak
judgment on the church,
and call for clearer thinking
as values seize or lurch.
The Christ that we would worship
would turn the world around,
and shake us from our comfort,
our certain, solid ground.

Then shatter walls and windows
and let the church reach out,
and not with Psalms and anthems,
but anger, let us shout
condemning every outrage
that demonises life,
and break the laws that damage,
evoking human strife.
